Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania recently explored how different tones of voice affect the quality of ChatGPT responses. Their work has not yet been formally peer reviewed, but it has already gained attention for challenging long held assumptions about human AI interaction.
The research team designed 50 basic questions covering a wide range of topics. Each question was rewritten five times, with tones ranging from very polite to extremely rude. The content of the question stayed the same. Only the wording and attitude changed.
A polite prompt sounded thoughtful and respectful, carefully asking the AI to consider the problem. A rude prompt, on the other hand, used dismissive or insulting language and spoke in a commanding or mocking tone.
