Halloween is one of the oldest festivals celebrated in this world. Every year it is celebrated on the day of 31st October. It is observed in many countries. It is said that this festival was celebrated 2000 years ago by the Celts of Britain. It is known by various names around the world as All Hallows Eve, Samhain, All Hallowtide, The Feast of the Dead, All Saint’s Eve, The day of the Dead etc. Actually this festival is very rich in history and culture. It is said that when Christianity came to Europe and specially England, 1st November was dedicated to all the dead saints who don’t have a name in their own name and called as All Saints Day. On that day they performed a mass known as “All Hallows Mass” and the evening before that was known as All Hallows E’en which later came to be known as Halloween.
On this day, the trend of wearing traditionally modeled costumes is mainly very popular. People make their clothes after supernatural figures such as Vampires, Skeletons, devils, monsters, ghosts and witches etc. In some places costume party is also held. According to the tradition parties are arranged and there games and other many activities are played. One of the most common games is Apple bobbing or dunking. Nowadays, many parties arrange for showing horror movies and telling ghost stories. There are also many special foods which are served on this evening.
The main two colors of Halloween are Orange and Black. Here orange denotes the end of the harvests and the black denotes death. One of the main attractions of this festival is Jack O’ Lanterns. It is made by carving pumpkin and putting a candle inside it. Two eyes, a nose and a mouth is cut in such a manner that the lights comes out from there and in the dark it looks like goblins or spirits. This adds an extra flavor to this festival. In some places Turnips are also used instead of Pumpkins.
